Every instrument in the history of digital drawing has been an attempt to put less between your hand and the line. The mouse, the trackpad, the tablet, the stylus — each one removed something. The last thing left to remove was the device, and a camera turns out to be enough: your webcam watches your hand, and a pinch of thumb and index finger is the pen.

This is not a ranking, and the newest is not the best at everything — it is the one with the fewest things in the way. Read it as five instruments that still all exist, because they do, and plenty of people use several.
It is worth noticing what the sequence is actually about, because it is not resolution or colour or software features. Every step is about distance: how far your hand is from the mark it is making, and how many objects sit in between. The mouse put a device on a desk and the line on a screen a foot away. The tablet closed the gap in feel but not in place. The stylus finally put the line under the hand. Each step removed one layer, and the layers left were always physical.
Gave: everybody already had one, so drawing on a computer stopped needing special hardware at all.
Took: it is a pointing device. It quantises to pixels, pivots from the wrist and has no idea how hard you are pressing, which is why mouse-drawn curves look careful rather than confident.
Gave: a surface, and finger movement instead of arm movement.
Took: about three inches of travel. Anything longer than that becomes lift, reposition, continue — and every reposition is a place the line can go wrong.
Gave: pressure, tilt and a real pen. For precision work at a desk this is still the best instrument on this list and nothing here pretends otherwise.
Took: money, desk space, drivers — and the strangest thing of all, which is that your hand is on the tablet while the line appears on the monitor. People adapt to that in a week and forget how odd it is.
Gave: the line under your own hand at last. Draw where you look.
Took: the pen is still a thing to own, charge and lose, and the surface is a sheet of glass the size of the device you bought.
Gave: nothing between the fingertip and the mark. No device to buy, nothing to charge, no surface — the drawing area is the air in front of a camera you already own, and it is as big as you can reach.
Took: steadiness and precision. A hand in mid-air is not resting on anything, so fine detail is harder here than with a stylus, and it needs light and a camera. That is the trade, stated plainly.
Removing the device removes its problems and introduces different ones, which is what every step on that list did. Worth knowing which is which before you decide whether this is your instrument.
Two things are genuinely different, and both take a few minutes rather than a few weeks to get used to. Neither is difficult; they are just unfamiliar, which is a different problem and one that solves itself.
The first is that there is no surface, which sounds like a small difference and is not. A pen resting on paper or glass is being held steady by the surface itself, and that support is doing more work than anyone notices until it is gone. Without it, a line is exactly as steady as your arm — which is why the tool spends effort on smoothing, and why drawing from the shoulder produces better results than drawing from the wrist.
The second is that your hands are visible while you work. On every other instrument the drawing and the drawer are in different places; here they share a frame, which is why so much of what people make with this ends up as video rather than as a still image. That is not a feature anyone designed — it is a consequence of where the camera is pointing.
There is no button and no nib touching a surface, so pen-down and pen-up come from a pinch: thumb and index together puts it down, opening the pinch lifts it. That one gesture is what separates a drawing from a single unbroken scribble.
About three seconds at the start — two holding an open hand, one holding a pinch. The gap between one person's fingers is not another's, so the threshold is placed inside the gap it just measured rather than at an average.
Raise two fingers for the tools, three for the session menu, point with one for a star pointer. It replaces a toolbar you would otherwise have to reach for with a mouse — which would rather defeat the point.
There is a third thing that only matters once you have been doing it a while: strokes here are stored as data rather than pixels. That sounds like an implementation detail and it changes what a drawing is — a line you made ten minutes ago can still be grabbed and bent into a different shape, and a rough circle can be told, after the fact, to become a real one. Nothing you draw is fixed at the moment you draw it, which is a freedom that pen-and-paper never had and that most digital tools only offer through undo.
None of that is technique, and this page is deliberately not a tutorial. If you want the gestures walked through properly, with each one shown rather than described, that is what the guide is for.
Every instrument on the list above arrived with a barrier, and the barrier was almost always money. A tablet is a purchase. A stylus-screen device is a bigger one. Even the mouse was, once, a thing you had to go and buy. Barriers like that decide who gets to try, and they decide it before anyone finds out whether they would have been any good at it.
Free tools have existed for a long time; free tools that also need no hardware at all are the new part, and that is the thing worth noticing here.
The historically interesting thing about this particular instrument is the entry cost. Every other one on the list asks you to buy something before your first line — even the mouse, once. This one asks for a webcam you already own and a browser tab, which makes it the cheapest way into digital drawing that has ever existed.
The honest expectation for the first five minutes: worse than a mouse. Your hand will drift, the pinch will fire a fraction early or late until you find the light touch, and your first line will be wobblier than you wanted. Everyone's is. What changes is that you stop aiming with your wrist and start moving from the shoulder, and at that point the lines get noticeably better — which is the same thing that happens when somebody moves from a sketchbook to a whiteboard.
