The definition

What is an air canvas?

An air canvas is a drawing surface you control with your hand instead of a pen. A camera watches you, software follows your fingertip, and the path it travels becomes a line on screen. There is no tablet, no stylus, and nothing to touch — you draw in the air, and the drawing appears in front of you.

The idea began as a computer-vision exercise: find a hand in a video frame, map its coordinates to a screen, and paint wherever the fingertip goes. AirVA is that idea finished — hand tracking that runs inside a browser tab, a pinch that starts and stops the line, and a canvas that keeps everything you make.

If you have ever used a mouse, you already know how it feels. Point to move. Pinch to draw. The only difference is that nothing sits between your hand and the picture.

How drawing in the air actually works

No depth sensor, no glove, no marker to hold. Three things happen, many times a second, for as long as your hand is in frame.

01 · THE CAMERA

The ordinary camera above your screen is enough. Frames are read inside the browser and never uploaded — there is no server in this loop at all.

02 · 21 LANDMARKS

Wrist, knuckles, joints, fingertips. Together those points describe where your hand is, how large it is on screen, and which way it is turned.

03 · THE PINCH

The gap between thumb tip and index tip, measured against the width of your own hand, is what says “draw”. Close them and ink flows. Open them and it stops.

Measuring the pinch relative to your hand rather than in raw pixels is the detail that makes it usable. It means the same gesture reads the same whether you lean toward the camera or sit back from it, and whether your hands are large or small. That is also why there is a short calibration when you first open AirVA: it learns the shape of your pinch once, so the line starts exactly when you meant it to.

Most air-drawing demos track your hand. AirVA is calibrated to your hand — a one-time setup tunes pinch detection to your fingers, which is the difference between drawing and fighting the cursor. Strokes are data, not pixels: undo anything, snap a shaky circle into a clean one, grab a drawn line and bend it. When you're done, keep what you made — export a photo or a video of your drawing appearing stroke by stroke. Everything runs in your browser; the camera feed never leaves your device.

How to get a line you like

Drawing in mid-air has no surface to brace against, so it will never be as precise as a pen on glass. It is expressive rather than exact — and a few small things make a real difference.

Face the light

The camera needs to see your fingers, and a bright window behind you turns you into a silhouette. Face the light. If the room is too dark, AirVA will tell you rather than sit there failing quietly.

Keep the wrist in frame

Tracking reads your hand as a whole shape, not just the fingertip. If your wrist drifts out of view, the line gets unsure. Sit back a little and give yourself room.

Draw from the arm

Long strokes come from the arm; small wrist movements wobble. It is the same advice whiteboard teachers and sign painters give, and it works here for the same reason.

Touch, don't squeeze

Touch your fingertips, do not squeeze them. Calibration learns a light contact, so a firm grip lands outside what it measured and the line starts late.

Your webcam sends pictures to your browser, software locates 21 points on your hand in each one, and the distance between your thumb tip and index tip decides when to draw. Because that distance is measured against the width of your own hand, the same pinch works whether you lean toward the camera or sit back from it.
