There are four genuinely different ways to draw in mid-air, and they suit different people. This page lays them out plainly — including where our own tool is the wrong choice.

Almost every “draw in the air” option falls into one of four buckets, and the buckets differ far more than the products inside them.
The honest headline: if you do not already own a headset, a webcam in a browser is the only option that costs nothing and works in the next minute.
These run in a normal browser tab. You allow camera access, the page tracks your hand, and you draw. Nothing installs. This is the most accessible category by a distance, and it is also the most crowded, so the differences are worth knowing.
Our own. A drawing tool first: an infinite canvas with zoom and pan, several brush types, an eraser, and export to full-resolution PNG or to video — including a timelapse of the drawing being made, which is the format that actually travels on social platforms. It calibrates to your hand at the start, measuring your open hand and your pinch so the pinch threshold fits you rather than an average. Strokes are data rather than pixels, which is where it goes beyond the category: draw a shaky circle and hold the pinch and it snaps into a clean one — lines, ellipses and polygons too — and you can pinch a stroke you already drew and pull it around like rope, or switch to a rubber material that stretches. Grab the line and bend it — try finding that anywhere else. Free, no account, and the camera feed is processed in the page rather than uploaded. Best for: making something you want to keep or post. Not for: 3D — it draws on a flat canvas.
A browser gesture-drawing tool with a clean gesture vocabulary — point to draw, open palm to erase, pinch to move strokes, fist to pause — plus colour and thickness controls, a glow effect, sharing links with QR codes, and download. Best for: quick expressive glowing art and sharing a link.
Aimed squarely at children aged three to seven, and built as a learning tool rather than an art tool: tracing, spelling, balloon maths, colour matching, bubble popping, aligned to the EYFS curriculum, using pinch-to-draw and point-to-select throughout. Core activities are free with a paid family plan for the rest. It states that no video, audio or images are stored or sent. Best for: young children and early motor skills. Not for: anyone wanting a serious canvas.

The DIY route: OpenCV for the camera and canvas, MediaPipe for the hand landmarks, and a few dozen lines to join the two. It is free, it is the standard student project, and it teaches more about computer vision than using any finished tool ever will.
It is also the option most likely to consume a weekend. The tracking is the easy part; the pen-up state, the jitter smoothing, the mirroring and the persistent canvas are where the time goes. We wrote those out in detail on our air canvas project page, including the five bugs almost everyone hits.
Choose this if the learning is the goal. If you need a working canvas by tomorrow, this is the wrong path and a browser tool is the right one.
These place strokes in 3D space around you using the phone's camera and motion sensors, which is genuinely magical for short doodles anchored to a real room. Two cautions, both from the app stores themselves: recent ratings in this category are frequently poor, and the business model is often a short free trial that converts into a weekly subscription — small numbers per week that add up to real money per year. Read the pricing screen carefully.
Apple Vision Pro, Meta Quest and similar devices do mid-air drawing properly. They have real depth sensing, hand tracking built for the job, and precision a webcam cannot match. If you own one, use it — it is better. The reason webcam tools exist is that most people do not own one, and a laptop camera is already in the room.
Picking by intent rather than by feature list:
A browser tool with real export. Check that it can produce a video, not just a still — the process is the interesting part.
Build it in Python with MediaPipe. Use a finished tool as a reference for how it should feel.
Draw in the Air is purpose-built for that age group; a general canvas is not.
A browser tool you can open on any machine, with no install and no logins for students.
Use it. Depth and precision beat a flat webcam every time.
Browser tools and DIY are free. Be careful with phone apps that advertise free and bill weekly.

For teaching young children letters and numbers through movement, Draw in the Air is purpose-built for ages three to seven. For learning computer vision, building it yourself in Python with MediaPipe teaches more than any finished tool. There is no single winner, which is why this page is a comparison rather than a ranking.
The browser tools do not — an ordinary webcam is the whole requirement. Headsets like Apple Vision Pro or Meta Quest do offer mid-air drawing with far better depth and precision, but they cost hundreds or thousands and are a different category of purchase. If you already own one, it will beat a webcam on precision. If you do not, a webcam is genuinely enough to draw with.
It varies, and it is worth checking before you invest time. AirVA is free with no account. Draw in the Air offers free core activities with a paid family plan for the extended set. Several phone apps in this category advertise as free and then open a weekly subscription after a short trial, which is where a lot of the category's poor reviews come from. Look for the words 'per week' before you enter card details anywhere.
The good ones do not. In browser tools of this kind the hand tracking runs inside the page on your own machine, so frames are processed and discarded locally rather than sent to a server. AirVA works this way, and Draw in the Air states the same. It is a fair question to ask of anything that wants your camera, and the answer should be easy to find.
Build it yourself with Python, OpenCV and MediaPipe — the point of the exercise is the pipeline, not the artwork. Use a finished tool as a reference for how a good one behaves, and to demonstrate the concept if your build is not ready.
This is the main practical difference between the tools. Some are experiences rather than editors and offer little or no export. If you intend to post the result, check for a full-resolution image export and, ideally, video — watching a drawing appear in mid-air is far more compelling than the finished still.
