Writing has always needed something to write on. Air writing removes that: the letters are formed in open space, and a camera turns the path of your fingertip into a stroke on screen.
What survives the trip is your handwriting's character. Because your arm is moving freely rather than resting on a desk, the letters come out larger and looser than they would on paper — closer to how you would write on a whiteboard than in a notebook. That is why air writing tends to look expressive rather than neat, and why it works so well for titles and signatures.
Three parts, and the middle one is what makes writing possible at all.
Each frame, the camera locates twenty-one points on your hand. The index fingertip is the one the ink follows.
Thumb and index together means write; apart means move without writing. Without this you could not lift between letters, and every word would arrive joined by travel lines.
Raw tracking trembles slightly every frame, and so do hands. The path is smoothed before it becomes a line, so letters come out as curves rather than sawtooth.

Air writing capture is what this page describes: tracking the hand and rendering the path as a stroke. Air writing recognition goes one step further and classifies that path into an actual character — turning a traced “A” into the letter A as text. Recognition is the harder problem, and an active research area, because air-written characters have no pen-down signal by default, vary hugely between writers, and are usually written in one continuous motion.
A pinch-based pen-up signal, of the kind used here, is one practical way to remove the hardest part of that ambiguity: it tells the system exactly where a stroke starts and ends, instead of forcing it to guess from motion alone.
